The Hub at St. Mary’s supports local emerging artists to get back on track following the pandemic

The Hub is commissioning four new works from emerging Staffordshire artists as part of its ongoing Artist Development programme. As we move forward following the lockdowns The Hub is supporting creative people to get their careers back on track. Many people working in the creative industries lost all of their income during the past twelve months and it is important to support, encourage and re-generate the arts community.

The Micro-Commissions will generate new work which will be displayed or performed at The Hub during the coming summer or early autumn.

Each of the four artists selected for the Micro-Commissions will receive £500 to fund their work.

The Hub welcomes theatre makers or artists working in any creative medium to submit their applications for one of the following commissions:

‘New Moves’ Two Micro-Commissions will be awarded for theatre, dance, performance and socially engaged practice. Both works created will be performed to an audience at The Hub as part of our next programme of events.

‘New Views’ is a Micro-Commission for Visual Artists, Film-makers or Photographers to produce work and curate the gallery at The Hub at St Mary’s in a four week exhibition during Oct/Nov 2021.

‘Come Together’ is a Micro-Commission for a Community Exhibition or Community Performance. The Hub is looking for creative ideas from artists or groups to engage with the local community and help them overcome the current feeling of isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic. Work will culminate in performance, sharing or exhibition moment during the summer 2021.

The Hub’s Creative Director, Anthony Evans said, "Artists have been put under great pressure by the pandemic. We know that there are so many artists locally and across Staffordshire who are longing to produce work or perform but have not had the opportunity. In the summer our historic building will be open and we want to fill it with their beautiful artwork. We are kick-starting this with our Micro-Commissions. As part of our ongoing Artist Development Programme, the commissions are an opportunity for new work to be created, performed and exhibited; from developing performance, dance and theatre work, to filling our small but perfectly formed gallery with art, film or photographic work.

"The Hub is a community venue and one of our commissions will enable a group from our local community to come together to create an exhibition or performance. We have not been too prescriptive with our Micro-Commissions as we want people to be imaginative and creative. To make the application process inclusive and as a great way of getting ideas across, applicants are being asked to submit a short video. We’re looking forward to Staffordshire artists creating really exciting new artworks at The Hub."

Anyone wishing to apply needs to submit a 60 second video telling The Hub which of the commissions they are applying for, giving a brief outline of their ideas and explaining how their project would fit with The Hub's aims to: deliver Covid-safe arts activities, encourage work from new artists and demonstrate allyship or a commitment to equality, diversity or inclusiveness.
