The Hub at St. Mary’s looks to the future

Performer at the Hub 2020

It’s been a year since The Hub at St Mary's hosted a show. The coffee shop opened briefly last summer but lockdown prevented the beautiful new community arts centre from being used for what it was intended. On March 12th 2020 the venue cancelled its programme of over thirty shows including performances and exhibitions from local performers and artists. This meant ticket and bar income was lost, and all the performers, for many of who it was their livelihood, lost all their work.

But as spring approaches, it's clear there is change in the air and the team have been working on a number of initiatives that will ensure the venue bounces back; bigger, better and stronger than before.

In March The Hub will announce a series of artist development opportunities; supporting artists to create and make new work as we emerge from the pandemic.

Hub Creative Director Anthony Evans said:

‘There is a real danger that artists and theatre makers get left behind in the post –pandemic economic recovery. We feel it’s important to prioritise these groups and support their recovery by investing in people who make, create, dream and innovate. So we've been working on an artist development programme – launching in March, it will focus on both providing online community arts platforms to nurture ideas and also hard cash to support these ideas.

We knew the pandemic would limit our activities this year and so were careful not to programme too much. We wanted to focus on audience and artist development and also some organisational development activities. Now, with the announcement of the roadmap we can plan to build up an exciting programme of events again from May 17th and on into next year.

We will be reopening in a very different environment – post pandemic, post Brexit, post Black Lives Matter, post Trump – all of these things will impact on how a thriving arts organisation works. We will be evolving in response to this new world, re-connecting with our community and widening our audience, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to The Hub during the coming months.’
