Ian McNabb was born in Liverpool and began his music journey at age 15, inspired by Marc Bolan. He formed The Icicle Works in 1981, which quickly became part of the Liverpool music renaissance alongside bands like Echo and the Bunnymen and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
The band's debut album featured hits such as "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" and "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)," earning them recognition in the UK, US, and Europe. After The Icicle Works disbanded in 1988, McNabb embarked on a solo career. He released several acclaimed albums, including Truth and Beauty and Head Like a Rock, which was nominated for a Mercury Prize in 1994.
Throughout his career, Ian has collaborated with notable artists, including Neil Young’s Crazy Horse and Mike Scott of The Waterboys. He has also released a string of solo albums, exploring various musical styles and consistently showcasing his songwriting talent. His autobiography, Merseybeast, has become a cult classic, further cementing his status in the rock world.
Ian continues to create music and tour extensively, releasing new albums such as Little Episodes, Eclectic Warrior, and Our Future in Space. His most recent works include collaborations with Cold Shoulder and artists like R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. Don’t miss your chance to see Ian McNabb live at the Lichfield Guildhall on January 25th, 2025, for an unforgettable evening as part of the THE ICICLE WORKS (Acoustic) Tour.
