Description
Visitors to Lichfield will be interested to learn of Jane Austen’s visit to Hamstall Ridware Staffordshire and the inspiration she found there for two of her novels.
Her cousin was Rector of St Michael & All Angels Church and she stayed at the rectory for several weeks in 1806. The village of Delaford in ‘Sense & Sensibility’ is regarded as inspired by scenes around Hamstall Ridware while her cousin is thought to have inspired Mr Collins’ character from ‘Pride & Prejudice’.
The 12th century, grade1 listed church and immediate area is little changed from when she stayed and is open daily for visitors.
Group tours when the full story can be explored can be arranged in advance followed by lunch in the popular village pub, The Shoulder of Mutton.
