Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s Birth – Discover her Lichfield District Connections and Inspirations
Each year on December 16th, fans across the world celebrate the birth of Jane Austen – one of England’s most beloved authors. Best known for her sharp wit, vivid characters, and timeless insight into society and romance, Austen’s novels remain as popular today as when they were first published over 200 years ago. But did you know that one of her most intriguing sources of inspiration came from right here in Lichfield District?
In 1806, Jane Austen paid a little-known visit to Hamstall Ridware, a charming Staffordshire village nestled in our beautiful countryside. She stayed for several weeks at the rectory of St Michael & All Angels Church, visiting her cousin, Edward Cooper, who was then the Rector. During her stay, the quiet beauty of the area, the local characters, and her cousin himself left a lasting impression—so much so that they’re widely believed to have influenced her writing.
A Hidden Inspiration Behind Two Beloved Novels
While exploring Hamstall Ridware and the surrounding landscapes, Austen is thought to have found the inspiration for Delaford, the fictional village in Sense & Sensibility. The charm and tranquil setting of the village are strikingly similar to the descriptions in her novel.
But perhaps even more intriguing is the suggestion that her cousin served as the inspiration for none other than Mr. Collins, the pompous and overly self-important clergyman from Pride & Prejudice. If true, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Austen’s sharp eye for personality and her brilliant use of satire.
Step Back in Time at St Michael & All Angels
The 12th-century, Grade I listed church where Austen spent so much time still stands proudly today. Amazingly, the building and its immediate surroundings remain largely unchanged since Austen’s visit, offering a truly immersive step back in time.
The church is open daily to visitors, and the peaceful grounds offer a perfect spot for reflection—or perhaps imagining what Jane herself saw during her stay.
For groups wanting to dive deeper into Austen’s local story, guided tours can be arranged in advance, complete with insights into her stay, the real-life inspirations for her novels, and a delicious lunch at a village pub to finish off the day.
