The Wonderful World of Prosecco You may be surprised to learn that Prosecco has been around since the Roman times and thought to of originated in the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste. In 2009, the Prosecco grape changed its name to Glera. Prosecco now refers to the protected area where the grapes are grown. Prosecco is available from two protected regions stretching across Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Northern Italy. The two areas are classified as Prosecco DOC and Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Prosecco DOC produces a range of quality levels, where as Prosecco Superiore DOCG is the higher quality, luxury style. The most popular style in the UK is Extra Dry followed by Brut. Confusingly, Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut and is a classification on the International Sparkling Wine scale. Prosecco is available in 3 different levels of fizz, with ‘Spumante’ meaning fully sparkling, ‘Frizzante’ being semi-sparkling and there is even a still Prosecco called ‘Tranquillo’. Today, Prosecco is the most popular sparkling wine in the UK and has seen its popularity rise since 2008, the time of the credit crunch. A more affordable luxury compared to Champagne, Prosecco is loved typically for its light, fruity and easy to drink qualities.
