Music & Theatre / Festivals / Arts & Culture The Carice Singers ‘Stargazers’ (Gustav Holst 150th anniversary)

About this event

Event info

As part of Lichfield Festival's Holst150 season this July, we’re delighted to welcome back The Carice Singers – who played such a major part in our fortieth anniversary 40 Voices/Spem in Alium programme in 2022 – for their Stargazers programme.

Born in Cheltenham in 1874, Gustav Holst was a composer, arranger and teacher, best known for his orchestral suite The Planets. Holst saw further than other artists: a creative spirit grounded in the heartland of British music, whose vision reached out to embrace English folksong, Hindu poetry and the outer limits of the cosmos itself. In his 150th anniversary year, The Carice Singers (conducted by George Parris) and harpist Olivia Jageurs present an evening of Holst’s masterly choral music, including The Evening Watch and the Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, and in tribute to Holst’s lifelong commitment to new music, they interweave it with recent works inspired by the same sense of the limitless, including a brand new piece by Scottish composer Electra Perivolaris, alongside works by Grace-Evangeline Mason and Urmas Sisask.

The Carice Singers is one of the most distinctive vocal ensembles in the UK, defined by its engaging approach to choral sound, trailblazing concert programmes and performances of exceptional quality. Established in 2011 and naming itself after Elgar’s only child, the choir has put his legacy – and particularly his fresh, poetic but unduly neglected music for unaccompanied voices – at the heart of its musical life.
