About this event

Event info

“There is a captivating, infectious joy about them and a palpable sense of togetherness, belonging and purpose.” – Royal Philharmonic Society, following their shortlisting for a 2021 RPS award.

Fifteen years ago a group of mainly novice singers gathered for a Lichfield Festival project led by Birmingham-based a capella quintet Black Voices. It led to a concert in Lichfield Cathedral and from this Lichfield Gospel Choir was born.

As a joyful choir with over 100 enthusiastic members and a repertoire which embraces African, gospel and soulful music, the Choir has been directed from the start by Themba Mvula, now with Gabriella Liandu as associate music director. The Choir continues to evolve, singing everything from Nigerian lullabies to Primal Scream and performing in increasingly prestigious venues – including a future performance at Wigmore Hall.

Join the Choir in this new Festival venue for what promises to be an unforgettable matinee concert. Vibrant new arrangements of beloved South African songs and captivating tunes from West Africa (crafted by the brilliant Fred Onovwerosuoke) blend seamlessly with exhilarating Gospel numbers. Let the energetic rhythms and rich harmonies sweep you away, leaving you tapping your feet and perhaps even joining in the singing!
