Medals For The Future

A hundred years since the Armistice, the country remembered those who served and sacrificed in World War I. At 11am on 11 November 2018, people gathered around memorials and monuments to quietly reflect on the moment when the guns fell silent.

Ceramicist Clare Twomey’s installation of porcelain medals is a lasting record of this moment. A hundred medals rest upon wooden benches, a fragile memento of a moment when people gathered to remember.

Like medals awarded for courageous deeds or plaques inscribed with the names of the fallen, Twomey’s medals honour an act or quality. Glazed upon the porcelain medals are the hopes of those who gathered at the Arboretum, the qualities that we can strive to commemorate in a hundred years’ time.
