Lichfield Festival: Chamber Music Weekend
We are very much looking forward to our upcoming Chamber Music Festival – new for 2021 – and would love to welcome you to one of the many events we have going on during the 14th – 17th October at The Hub at St Mary’s.
The long weekend opens with a new arrangement of Bach's Goldberg Variations for star guitarist, Craig Ogden (Thu 14th) and, fast approaching their own significant milestone (50 years in 2022), the Brodsky Quartet will be with us on Saturday 16 th for a full evening recital to include Schubert's Death and the Maiden. Joining us too are some familiar faces, including pianist Clare Hammond (Fri 15 th ), part of the outstanding team for 2018's Celebration of Gershwin & Bernstein, as well as violinist Ionel Manciu (a 2021 Young Artist) who, with clarinetist – and Festival Board Member – Kate Romano, and Jonathan Gunthorpe (the 2015 Festival's Papageno in The Magic Flute), brings us Melodys of Earth & Air – a recital of music inspired by and paired with the poetry of John Clare.
Two exceptional Young Artists also appear in the series, thanks to the prestigious Countess of Munster Trust Recital Scheme: oboist Hannah Condliffe (originally from Stone) plays Poulenc and Saint-Saëns (Sun 17th ), and cellist Leo Popplewell (who would have appeared in July as part of the Mithras Trio, had Covid not intervened), will play an afternoon recital on Saturday 16th with music by Beethoven and Rachmaninov. A selection of the latter's songs also features in a recital by the superb soprano, Galina Averina, together with Schumann's ravishing song cycle Frauenliebe und -leben ("A Woman's Love And Life") at 5pm on Friday 15th.
The Chamber Weekend will close with a performance by harp, viola and flute trio, the Pelléas Ensemble (Sun 17th) and will now feature Anne Denholm, official Harpist to HRH the Prince of Wales from 2015-2019, who is now replacing Oliver Wass who has withdrawn due to Covid implications.
